session 4: Secondary Sentence Elements
Greetings Friends..
We learn a lot from the first until the third session, and it is time for us to move on to the next subject. The main elements are important to build a sentence, but there are other parts or other elements equally important to construct a sentence.
I need to remind you to at least understand the main elements in a sentence before you proceed, as it will get trickier from this moment on. If you feel reluctant, feel free to check out our earlier posts and do the exercises.
This time we would like to discuss about the other sentence elements (besides subjects, verbs, objects, complements, and expletive); the Secondary Sentence Elements.
The Secondary Sentence Elements are: Adjectives (ADJ), Nouns used as modifier (N), Subordinate Clauses (SC), Verbal Phrases (VP), Prepositional Phrases (PP), Adverbs (ADV), Appositives (AP), and the last; Modifiers of Modifiers (MM).
Let’s begin with the lesson, shall we?
The Adjectives (ADJ)
Adjective is used to modify nouns in a sentence.
Example: A red car parked across the building. (Modifies car)
Adverb is used to modify verbs and adjectives.
Example: The night is quite cold. (Modifies cold)
Noun used as modifier means that a noun can be modified by other noun.
Example: The bathroom door is transparent. (Modifies door)
Subordinate Clause can be used to modify a sentence element.
Example: A singer who wants to succeed must practice hard. (Modifies the subject singer)
Verbal Phrase can be used to modify the main sentence element.
Example: Peeping from the keyhole, he saw everything. (Modifies he as a subject)
Prepositional phrase is also used to modify any main element in a sentence.
Example: The judge in the court was ruthless. (Modifies judge, the subject)
The appositive is used in a sentence to explain the noun and to elaborate its meaning.
Example: Ricardo Kaka, AC Milan’s future captain, points to the sky. (Explain the noun Ricardo Kaka)
Modifier of Modifiers is used to modify the secondary sentence element by expressions.
Example: The district chief attorney is retiring due to health issue. (Modifies chief which modifies attorney)
7 tips for saving your money 2
Hello, my fellas. How do you do? Have you read the article entitled “7 tips to save your money” in the last session?. I hope that you have read it. In this session, I just want to prove my statements about the last article by giving the examples to you so that you can understand. Let’s get started.
- Be a miser
Miser can generally be considered as a person who loves money and hates spending it. It can be categorized into two groups namely money and time miser. There is a difference between money and time miser in accordance with the point of view each other. Money miser assumes that the money is more important and valuable than the time. In contrast, the time miser assumes that the time and money are very important.
- Long-term planning
Long-term planning is a planning that is used to run something will last or have an effect over a long period of time. For instance, you have determined something that you want to buy, such as a car. Before buying it, you are supposed to have a long-term planning for your budget whether it is sufficient or not. If your budget is not still sufficient, you will have to make long-term planning in order to save your money.
- Think about your future
The main reason why you need to think about your future with respect to the money is that you will have much money in the future. Some people generally only tend to think about the present time without thinking the future time. In addition to those, you may not forget about your past time. The main reason is that your present and future time are formed by your past time. This reason is similar to when you want to save your money. For example, in the past time you did not have enough money to buy your primary’s daily needs so that you had got to borrow money from your friends, but now you have much money. Your past time plays an important role for you not to repeat something similar twice when you do not have money. Hence, you are aware of saving your money which will be used in the future.
- Make a financial report
Financial report is a list that includes the summary of income and outcome for a certain period, for example a month, three months, and a year.
Here I will give my reference how I can save my money
Revenue Rp800.000,00
Consumption Rp5000,00 X 3 times X 30 days = Rp450.000,00
Transportation Rp6000,00 X 20 days = Rp120.000,00
Rp570.000,00
Rp230.000,00
From my financial report, we can see the summary of income and outcome. The sum of money that I can save at the end of the month is Rp230.000,00. This financial report will help you find out the overall income and outcome during a month. If you want to try something as what I have done, please go ahead.
- Be patient not to buy the secondary’s daily needs
It is vital to distinguish between the primary’s and secondary’s daily needs. The primary’s daily needs consist of food and water because all the humans need to eat and drink for their survival. Accordingly, you are supposed to prioritize to buy the primary’s daily needs instead of the secondary’s daily needs.
- Be a good manager
Everyone that knows how to conduct the money well can be a good manager. Conducting the money is a very simple way. There are three ways that everyone can choose such as making a financial report, a long-term planning, and an objective as a significant part of being a good manager. This time I want to emphasize that you need an objective why you need to conduct your money well. Before conducting your money, it is advisable for you to have an objective why you want to save your money. For example, you save money owning to your willpower to buy something that you want. So, your objective is to buy something that you want.
- Stop using your credit cards
Using your credit cards without limitation can endanger your finance. For example, you buy the ostentatious jewelries, the home-appliances, the electronic machines, and so on by using your credit cards. You will be aware of using your credit cards perpetually from the bank when you have a large number of bad debts that you have got to pay every month.

Movie Freak: A Must See Tv Series

This time we would like to review an American television series that captures everyone’s heart; Smallville. For those of you who have not watched this series; then you should consider reading this article.
Now before we talk about Smallville, there’s a question you need to answer; do you know who Superman is?
A pretty dumb question, yes.. But for those of you who don’t know the answer, Superman is a fictional character in a comic book strip created by Jerry Siegel and Canadian-born artist Joe Shuster in 1932. He is the man flying across the Metropolis sky fighting injustice wearing a red cape, blue tights, a big shield with an “S” in it on his chest, and of course the trademark: red-short-tight-“underwear” outside his pants. He is actually an alien from the planet Krypton. Was born as Kal-El, he was put inside a space aircraft by his parents and was rocketed to earth just before Krypton was blown apart. Kal-El’s space craft crashed on earth, near Kansas and was found by a farmer (Jonathan Kent) and his wife (Martha Kent). They couldn’t have a child so they raised Kal-El instead and named him Clark Kent. Clark grew as a regular farm boy but possessed super human abilities which he and his adopted parents kept secret. He worked at the daily planet in the city of Metropolis as a reporter after graduating Kansas High, and that was also the time when he met his one and true love; Lois Lane.
Superman has become very famous across the globe, considered as the leader of all superhero alongside The Batman, and his character was used as a base copy for creating other superhero characters. The success of the comic-strip led to block-buster movies such as “Superman: The Movie” in 1978 and the latest “Superman Returns” in 2006. Even now, Superman continues to exist in the heart of all the superhero’s fans.
That pretty much covers “The Man of Steel”, so now let’s get to the fun part..
Smallville is an American television series developed by writers/producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on the DC Comics character Superman. What makes it different than the other story of Superman is that Smallville is trying to explore the life of Clark Kent when he was just a teenager living in Kansas with his adopted parents. Smallville points out Clark having difficulties dealing with a teenager life while having superhuman strength and his relationships are the main plot for the series.
So you won’t find Clark wearing Superman’s suit here, instead he will be wearing normal clothes. He won’t have any abilities in the first episodes except for super strength. Not to worry though, because he will find his other abilities along the way his journey towards maturity.
But what makes it a very entertaining and successful is Clark’s relationship between him and the girl of his dreams; Lana Lang. The writers really go all-out in ensuring the audience will be kept wondering how the story will continue and how Clark’s relationships will evolve in each episode. The story goes like this; Clark has two best friends; Chloe Sullivan and Pete Ross and a girl of whom he adores very much; Lana Lang. At first he’s just friends with her because she already has a boyfriend. But he cannot escape his feelings for her and tried hard to get close to her. After a while there’s a turn of event which led to the breakup between Lana and his boyfriend, and the opportunity didn’t come to waste as Clark began to move closer and closer to the girl of his dreams. When they get pretty close, a new problem comes; Clark is struggling whether he tells Lana about his powers or not. The hard part about telling her is that he is afraid that she will not accept him as who he is. Another issue is; Clark learned when he arrived to Earth, his spacecraft created a meteor shower that destroyed most of Smallville and killed so many innocent people including Lana’s parents. He’s afraid that Lana will think Clark is the reason why her beloved parents died.
That was just the initial story of Smallville. After a few seasons, the creators then changed the whole idea of Clark’s life before he becomes Superman to a completely different story of Superman. Perhaps the creators were fascinated by the success of “Batman Begins”, and decided to re-write the life of Superman into a something the audience can relate to with the reality.
So you will see Clark working as a reporter at the Daily Planet, meeting Lois Lane and other DC superhero characters, fighting his arch-enemy Lex Luthor whom in the first few seasons was his friend, but without wearing a silly costume.
Smallville is basically an entertaining television series filled with amazing adventures of Clark fighting evil-doers, romantic stories between him and the female characters in the series, and his struggle with his teenage life. The best thing about watching the series is that you will be captured in the world of Smallville, where you will laugh and cry because of the story.
Smallville is filled with many amazing talents such as Tom Welling (Clark Kent), Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), the phenomenal Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor), Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan), and many more.
For those who don’t know who Superman is, or those who dislike The Man of Steel, you can rest assure that the series will not let you down at all. You don’t have to be a Superman freak to understand the story, and you don’t have to love Superman to love Smallville. What you have to be is someone who loves watching and hungry for a good movie to fill in your days.
The last thing I know about Smallville is; it teaches us not to look for a hero to come and rescue your day; deep inside of everyone’s heart, we are all heroes. You don’t have to wear costumes or have superhuman abilities to fight injustice; we can do it with our own strength. If you help an old woman to cross the street, or if you help a lost child to find her parents in the mall, or if you help your friends to overcome their tears; you are the hero yourselves!
Overall what we are trying to say is; please guys watch this series! Let yourselves be lost in the wonderful world of Smallville! It will not be a waste, I can promise you that..
And I’ll see you again at our next article..
Good bye all..

Session 3: The Complements and The Expletives
This is the third session in which I want to explain to you all about the complements and the expletives. Before explaining them, did you see the second session and do the exercise? I hope that you find out about the differences between the direct and the indirect object.
This time I want to explain to you about the complement and expletive. Have you heard the definition of the complements and the expletives? If you have not, let’s get started.
The Complement (C)
Complement is a word or words, especially an adjective or a noun, that is used after linking verbs such as be and become describes the subject of the verb.
A complement always follows a linking verb; that is, a verb expresses a condition. There are four complements in linguistics, such as subject, object, verb, and adverbial complements. However, I am just going to explain you about what subject and object complements mean as the basic complements.
1. Subject complements
A complement describes a subject by means of the verb. The grammatical construction is (SUBJECT + VERB/LINKING VERB + COMPLEMENT).
a. I am late (predicative adjective)
S LV C
b. he seems angry (predicative adjective)
S LV C
As you can see in the first example, “I am late”, “late” as a complement and it pertains to a subject of “I” as well as the second example. Why does the word of “am” and “angry” refer to a linking verb, not verb? Because it states a situation, not an action. That is all about the subject complements. So,is it really easy for you to do?. Let’s go to the other section.
A complement describes an object by means of the verb. The grammatical construction is (SUBJECT + VERB/LINKING VERB + OBJECT + COMPLEMENT).
a. He named his child Johnson (predicative noun)
S V O C
b. They left their child alone (predicative adjective)
S V O C
Can you see the grammatical structure? “He named his child Johnson”, “Johnson” is considered as a complement that refers to “his child”. Therefore, it is called as a predicative noun.
The Expletives (EX)
Expletive is a linguistic term which does not have a meaning form syntactic expletives; that is, words that perform a syntactic role but contribute nothing to meaning. For example, there or it is an expletive example which omit the actual subject that is followed by the verb is considered as an empty word.
a. It is an old house
EX
b. There is a new problem
EX
Can you find out the grammatical structure? In the first example, “it is an old house”, “it” does not have a meaning and “it” does not refer to anything.
That is all we have for today’s session. It is a good chance for you to do the exercises in order to enlighten your knowledge about the complements and the expletives. Meanwhile, why don't you try to do the exercise that I have in the other post;

Good luck!
Session 2 : Direct and Indirect Objects
This is the second session of Working On Your Sentence Grammar. But first, have you guys seen the first session? Did you fill in the exercise session? And did you learn anything new by them? We hope so..
Well, if you haven’t the time to check out them, I personally advise you to, since this second session is very connected to the first one..
Now.. Without further a due, here’s the topic for this week’s session;
The Direct Object
Direct object is a noun or somewhat equivalent to it that followed a verb which describes an action. If you are having a hard time to understand it, direct object is a noun that answers the question “what” or “whom” just after the verb.
Here’s some example (direct objects are bold and underlined);
1. The police shot the robber.
S V DO
2. Joanne enjoys swimming.
S V DO
3. Dirt covered the porch.
S V DO
In the first example, the robber answered the question of “Who is shot?”, while swimming in the second example answered the question “What Joanne enjoys?”. The porch is explaining “What was covered by dirt?”.
And that’s all there is about the direct object. Really easy don’t you think?
Moving on to next matter, shall we?
The Indirect Object
Indirect object is pretty close to direct object, since the indirect object answers questions like “To whom or to what?” or “Of whom or of what?” . The indirect object is placed before the direct object. This can be very tricky, so please spend some time to observe the examples given.
Examples;
1. John gave Susan flowers.
S V IO DO
2. The police asked the driver difficult questions.
S V IO DO
Can you see the pattern? In example number one, Susan answered the question “John gave flowers to whom?”, and in the second example, the driver explained “the police asked difficult questions to whom?”.
Well I believe that’s all we have for today’s session. Keep waiting for the next session of Working On Your Sentence Grammar.. Meanwhile, why don’t you guys try to answer the next exercise session..
See you soon..

7 tips for saving your money
Here are some tips for you to save your money even though you are on a tight budget.
1. Be a miser
You do not have to worry about having a tight budget in order to fill up your daily’s needs. By being a miser, you will not only save your money but also hate spending it. For instance, you are intending to buy a car for your pleasure. If you had been a miser, you would have not bought it. However, you will prioritize your main daily’s needs instead of buying a car.
2. Long-term planning
This is good for you to have a long-term planning because you can get a large number of advantages if you practice it in your life. The advantages that you can get are to keep your money well, to think about the long-term function in which something that you have bought, and to try not to buy the useless things.
3. Think about your future
Before buying something, I am sure that you have a certain intention why you want to buy it. My suggestion is that you have got to think about your future by preparing your money for the most significant intention.
4. Make a financial report
By making a financial report, you will find out your income and outcome. This financial report is intended for finding out how much money you have spent for a month. So, you can see your overall money that you have at the end of the month.
5. Be patient not to buy the secondary daily’s needs
It is very good for you to buy your primary daily’s needs than the secondary daily’s ones. The secondary daily’s needs that some people tend to buy are a car, electronic utensils, and home-appliances. By buying these equipments, sometime they will have no sufficient money to buy their daily’s needs at the end of the month. Therefore, you are supposed to have a strategy how to handle it so that you can still have enough money at the end of the month.
6. Be a good manager
It is necessary for you to be a good conductor in conducting your money. There are many ways that you can do for conducting your money well. You have got to make a priority for your money what something you want to buy. If it is not important for you, you will just refuse to buy it.
7. Stop using your credit cards
Apparently, using credit cards look like simple thing, but it can be very dangerous for you to pull it from the bank perpetually. Someone is not usually aware of using his credit cards in order to buy something. He will be aware when he has withdrawn much money from the bank.
All in all, these tips are very simple to do on daily basis. We will discuss these points in details in the next post to help you save your money.
Keep watching for more detailed tips on finance. See you then
